On Thursday, 29 July, Mikis Theodorakis celebrates his 85th birthday. A good reason to honour and thank him.

In Greece a monster concert with 32 musicians will take place on Lycabettus on 29 July.


But also in Chania and the following days, in almost all cities of Greece - Sparta, Eksamilia, Kalamata, Kolindros, Xanthi, Kalymnios... - concerts are held with great musicians as an homage to Theodorakis.

Elena Loizou, a music teacher from Cyprus, and friends, Yianni and Taso, have introduced the culture of Greece through music and song in North Jersey at the Montville Library on Saturday, July 17 at 1:30 p.m. in the Pio Costa Auditorium. The performance included also songs by Mikis Theodorakis,

In Bilbao (Basque Country) the "Zorba" ballet is to performed; in Italy, the Tokyo Ballet is touring with the "Greek Dances", choreographed by Maurice Béjart.


On 28 July, a "Greek Night" in honour of Theodorakis takes place in Munich. Invited as a singer are the two major protagonists of the songs of Theodorakis: glorious Maria Farantouri and Petros Pandis.

On the birthday itself, Gina Pietsch performs together with Uwe Streibel, a homage to Theodorakis: "Because I am not bending to the law" in "Cum Laude" in Berlin.

The two artists offer the same program also on 12 September at the Bode Museum.

On 13 November the complete "Canto General" will be performed in Berlin at the Max-Schmeling-Halle with the two great protagonists of the cycle: Maria Farantouri and Petros Pandis.


Luxembourg, a country especially dear to the heart of the composer, celebrates him on 28 October 2010 at 20 h. with a "tribute to Mikis Theodorakis" by the Chorale Municipale "Uelzecht" Esch / Alzette, led by Jeff Speres in the famous Philharmonic Hall.

Contributors are: the Orchestra Estro Armonico, the soloists Irini Karayianni, mezzo-soprano, and Pieter Hendriks, bass baritone, the world famous bouzouki player Lakis Karnezis and the "Jannis Zotos band” with Jannis Zotos, bouzouki and guitar, Reinmar Henschke, piano, Heiner Witte, guitar, Thanassis Zotos, bass, and Marco Bruckdorfer, drums: They have all worked for long years under the baton of Theodorakis at international concerts and they do know his work very well.

Four aspects of Theodorakis’s work are highlighted in this unique concert: the popular composer (Omorphi Poli, Tou mikrou voria, Sto Perigiali), the political composer (The March of the Spirit), the symphonic composer (3rd movement of Symphony No. 3), the universal Composer (vocal and orchestral scenes from the ballet "Zorba the Greek").
