"Night of Death" - Poems

1. THE POET

You are not the blood of fire you who open the wound with the knife in the dawn.
The poet is an open window
in the power of the times
and he bas the memory of the dead ;
He speaks the tongue of God with the fire of lightning he speaks the tongue of God and his eyes are everywhere.
You are not he who hoids me
with two crossed knives
and has birds on his shoulders.
The poet wears the sun on his hair and is set apart from everyone he is the sea and the sky;
He speaks the tongue of God with the fire of lightning he speaks the tongue of God and his eyes are everywhere.

2. NIGHT OF THE MURDERER

There will be a morning when the black rider will come And if the dust is too great take away the cloud
Put on blue and gold
and clothe yourself in silk
And if it is the sun it will be ashamed
and the evil will change
But if it is the night of the murderer and night of a Saturday
like a ring the name
give it to death

3 - IN THE COURTYARD OF THE EMBITTERED

In the courtyard of the embittered
dry grass sprouts up
there is no tree nor bird to relieve his suffering.
In the old house
from whence ail have departed
death the secret
slowly rolls up.
And if the tears are burning
one can't tell whom they are
for those who will come
or those who do not return.

4 - SOLITUDE

Those who were not taken by solitude
were taken by death
and their words were birds
to sing in my doorway
Those whom the river has not carried away
the dreams have betrayed
night has taken them and smoke
and they guard us in our sleep.

5- EVANGELIA PISSA

The years have passed like the dark river
you too have passed through my life.
Now as I sit and reckon
how many were lost, how many left us
and who were scattered
Now as they daily become fewer
those who suffered for us
Those who found us in the night of death
I call you, my refuge
Evangelia Pissa.

6- NOW HIDE YOUR NAME

Within my little heart
.the dusty cloud passed through
now hide your name
and the road is open
only in your dreams
Now dogs guard you
and thieves lie in wait for you
and all the friends were turned to trees
in front of .the closed doors
wild grass arid clover.

7- THE FOURTH NIGHT

The house had birds as a roof in August
and the birds of night
foundations the sea and the south wind.
For three nights they were nailing
for three days they were building
On the fourth night I sat in the midst of it
and lit my lamp
The fourth night,
four knives
four nails
in my heart.

8 - BIRTHDAY

You told me what your name is
the land where you were born
for whom you save your tears
and has since been lost to you.
You told me of words and men
but such things you must have told
before each time in a different place
without love and shame.
You read to me Seferis
again the same thing you did yesterday
but my heart knows
that poets do not save us.
You read for me Elytis too
and we listened to music
You showed me your old house
and whatever you had there hidden.
You spoke to me in foreign tongues
but persuade me you cannot
I grew up with so many wounds
please forgive me.

9 - YOU HAVE THE MOON AS YOUR EYES

You have the moon as your eyes
and the night is your home
but of those which you took from me
none belong to you
You have tears as your love
with fire and knife
and you have poison for wine
and separation in your hand.

10 - CRY CUT YOUR SHAME AT MY KNEES
Now you too will write to persuade me
whatever bitterness you remember and have heard
But the others have reserves of memories
they have with them, indeed, the times.
Cry out your shame at my knees
I will bore holes in your head with nails
my hands will be swords in your desire
snakes will run in the closed eyes.
